Architects Southwest has announced the winners of their 2011 Zombie Safe House Competition. A mobile, armadillo-like shell designed by Austin Fleming was this year’s first place winner. The annual competition asks its participants to design the perfect zombie apocalypse fortress. The designers have to consider food, power, waste, weapons, storage, evacuation, and (most importantly) how to keep zombies out of their houses. The judges panel included a number of individuals involved in the architecture and/or zombie field including last year’s first place winner and Max Brooks, author of The Zombie Survival Guide. Check out the first place design below, and visit the official Facebook page to check out all the winners!

Fans of Max Brooks’s World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War have been up in arms since Paramount Pictures issued a press release for their upcoming film adaption of the novel. The synopsis included in the release seems to dictate that the movie will be quite different from the book. Marc Forster, director of Paramount’s World War Z, addressed the movie’s changes in a recent conversation with MTV. In the interview, Forster says they are “trying to still include as much as we can from the book,” but admits that there are differences from the novel. One change he acknowledges is the characteristics of the zombies. In the novel the zombies are classic, slow-walking corpses, but the zombies in the movie will have a “different approach” says Forster. Check out the entire interview at MTV.com. World War Z is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012.

The zombie movie has been filming in Glasgow where, according to Metro, the film’s star Brad Pitt reportedly saved a female extra from being crushed by a crowd of running “zombies” on set. The film also stars Mireille Enos (Big Love, The Killing), James Badge Dale (The Departed), Matthew Fox (Lost), and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). World War Z is based on Max Brooks’s World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War–the story of a United Nations worker traveling the globe, gathering stories from survivors ten years after the planet-wide zombie invasion. A recent press release from Paramount Pictures seems to show that the movie is headed in a slightly different direction than the novel:
“The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.”
Marc Forster (Quantum Of Solace) is directing World War Z, and the film is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012.

The film tells the story of a UN researcher (played by Brad Pitt) reporting on the deadly aftermath of a world-wide zombie outbreak. Marc Forster is directing the film which is currently in pre-production.
According to Deadline, Jeff Bridges is in talks to star in Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D.
